Descritivo da Vaga:
Tipo de Atividade: Our future interns will mainly participate in outside plant ecological field and pot experiments, and have the possibility to gain insight into a wide range of practical methods and theory (ranging from plant fitness measurements, over trait measurements to soil biological assessments and chemical analyses of plant tissue). Therefore, the willingness to work outside during summer is a pre-requisite. However, there will also be time to read textbooks and scientific articles about our topics (we provide the relevant literature), to attend weekly scientific talks and to learn about experimental design, hypothesis formulation and data analysis using the program “R” during your stay in our department. In summer 2019 interns supervised by Dr. Julia Walter will mainly participate in two pot experiments situated at our field station (20 minutes walk or 5 minutes bicycle drive away from our Institute). The main experiment (in which a former IAESTE student of our project will work as a phD student) investigates how different stress-situations for mother plants will affect the behaviour and stress response of their offspring (so-called transgenerational plasticity). Another experiment studies legacy effects of soil moisture stress (from very moist to extremely dry) on different biotic interactions between plants and animals (pollinators, herbivores) or fungi (mycorrhiza, decomposers). There will sometimes also be the opportunity to get involved in other projects of the Institute or to take over the responsibility for a sub-project within our larger projects. The applicants have the chance to learn a lot about plant ecology and species interactions, different methods in ecology (ranging from investigations of soil processes to assessing fitness of plants), experimental design and data acquisition and get a basic insight into data analysis and statistics. The internships will take place at the Institute of Landscape and Plant Ecology at the University of Hohenheim. We are well experienced in hosting many different IAESTE interns from all parts of the world during summer, Dr. Julia Walter has supervised more than 10 internships in the last 3 years. The IAESTE local committee of Stuttgart is extremely supportive and organises housing, payment and many free-time activities (therefore, you do usually not need to search for your own accomodation). Stuttgart is the capital of Baden-Württemberg (630.000 inhabitants), situated in South-west Germany and offers many cultural and free-time activities. The nearby area “Schwäbische Alb” provides opportunities for recreational activities (hiking, climbing, castles…). The campus of the University of Hohenheim is said to be one of the most beautiful in Germany. We are looking forward to welcome you at our Institute!
