Tipo de Atividade: Microbial degradation of epoxy and carbon epoxy composites Empa's Laboratory for Mechanical Systems Engineering in Duebendorf in collaboration with Empa's Applied Wood Laboratory in St. Gallen aims at investigating and characterizing the microbial degradation of epoxy and of carbon fiber-reinforced epoxy composites. Different routes for microbiological degradation of epoxy and carbon-fiber epoxy composites shall be compared in an experimental approach on laboratory-scale using selected fungal and/or bacterial strains, in pure culture as well as in a consortium. The bio-degradation shall be assessed with respect to material composition, material preparation, degradation rate, residuals, and carbon-fiber property degradation. The tasks performed by the intern/trainee will comprise, e.g., -microbial culturing and Monitoring -material manufacturing and processing -preparing and monitoring bio-degradation tests, partly in collaboration with Empa technician -testing mechanical and other physical/mechanical properties at different stages of degradation -providing data analysis and presenting results of the activities at regular project meetings. With this traineeship you will acquire skills such as basic microbiological procedures, polymer processing, composite manufacturing, material characterization, and data analysis. You will get first-hand experience of microscopy and mechanical characterization, and you will use the most advanced characterization equipment. As an employer, Empa offers excellent research facilities, a multicultural and stimulating environment, student accommodation, internal lectures, etc. Previous experience with microorganisms, polymers or polymer composite processing or characterization is preferred, but not essential. The candidate is expected to have good interpersonal skills to integrate within the project team and the Composite Group of the Laboratory for Mechanical Systems Engineering of Empa.
